Organic Cotton vs Bamboo for Babies: Fabrics and Certifications Explained
11 October 2026 Baby
When you choose clothes for a baby or young child, the fabric matters as much as the design. Organic cotton and bamboo are two of the most popular choices for babywear, and both come with labels and certifications that can be confusing. This guide explains how the two fabrics differ, what the main certifications actually cover, and what to look for when you shop.
For details on every fabric in our collections, including feel and care, see Our Fabric Guide: Understanding the Fabrics We Use.
What is the difference between organic cotton and conventional cotton?
Cotton is a natural fibre from the cotton plant. It is soft, breathable and absorbent, which is why it has long been used for babywear. Conventional cotton farming, however, typically relies on synthetic pesticides and fertilisers and uses a lot of water.
Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or genetically modified seeds. The finished fabric keeps the softness and breathability of cotton, while the farming has a lower impact on soil, water and wildlife.
How is bamboo fabric made?
Bamboo grows quickly, needs relatively little water and can be harvested without replanting, which makes it an attractive raw material. Most soft bamboo fabric used in clothing is made by breaking down bamboo pulp into cellulose and spinning it into fibre, a process known as bamboo viscose or rayon.
That process involves chemicals, so the way a bamboo fabric is manufactured matters as much as the plant itself. Some manufacturers use closed-loop systems that recover and reuse chemicals. This is why certifications are especially useful when you buy bamboo clothing.
Which is better for my baby: organic cotton or bamboo?
Both can be a good choice, and many families use both. In general:
- Organic cotton is breathable, durable and easy to care for, making it a dependable everyday choice for sleepsuits, rompers and swaddles.
- Bamboo has a smooth, silky feel and is light and breathable, which many parents like for sleepwear in Singapore's warm, humid climate.
Whichever you choose, look at how the fabric is certified rather than relying on the word "organic" or "bamboo" alone.
What does GOTS certification mean?
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is widely recognised as a leading standard for organic textiles. It covers the organic fibre itself and also how the fabric is processed and manufactured along the supply chain, including restrictions on the chemicals that can be used. A product labelled "organic" under GOTS must contain at least 95% certified organic fibre.
All of our organic babywear is made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, with dyes and prints that are AZO- and formaldehyde-free. The range includes zip sleepsuits with foldable mittens and footies, kimono rompers and swaddles. Browse our 100% GOTS organic collection.
What other organic certifications might I see?
- Organic Content Standard (OCS): verifies the presence and amount of organic material in a product and tracks it through the supply chain. Unlike GOTS, it does not set rules for chemical processing.
- USDA Organic: a United States standard that relates to how crops such as cotton are farmed, without synthetic pesticides or genetically modified seeds.
Which certifications matter for bamboo fabric?
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100: the finished fabric has been tested for a list of harmful substances. It is not an organic standard, but it tells you the textile has been checked.
- FSC (Forest Stewardship Council): confirms that the bamboo comes from responsibly managed sources.
- OCS: can also apply to bamboo, verifying organic content.
Our Luxe Bamboo fabric is OEKO-TEX certified and FSC certified, with AZO- and formaldehyde-free dyes. It is breathable and temperature-regulating, and is used across our bamboo sleepsuits and pyjamas. See our bamboo collection and sleepwear.
How can I check a label when shopping?
Different brands choose different certifications, so not every product will carry the same ones. When comparing:
- Look for the name of the standard, not just a general claim such as "eco" or "natural".
- Check what the certification covers: the fibre, the processing, or testing of the finished fabric.
- Read the product description for details on dyes and prints.

No. Bamboo may be grown without pesticides, but most bamboo fabric is processed into viscose. Look for certifications such as OEKO-TEX or FSC to understand how it has been tested and sourced.
What does "100% GOTS-certified organic cotton" mean?
The fabric is made entirely of organic cotton, and both the fibre and the way it is processed are certified under GOTS.
Are Le Petit Society bamboo products organic?
Our Luxe Bamboo range is OEKO-TEX and FSC certified rather than certified organic. Our organic range is made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton.
