Nose in the book :: Animal Fun
Regardless of whether your child has watched Disney?s latest version of The Jungle Book, or read the original story by Rudyard Kipling for that matter, it isn?t hard to find a kid that won?t be amazed by or curious about the animal kingdom. We?re kicking off our new monthly blogpost on recommended reads with books that have animals as their main characters.
If I were an owl? by Anne Wilkinson for Jellycat
This interactive touch-and-feel book introduces the reader to the looks and possible behaviours of an owl. With its easy-to-read sentences and different textures to aid in sensory development, If I were an owl and others in the series are a great way for infants to learn and understand about animals.
Miffy at School by Dick Bruna
?
Miffy the rabbit needs little introduction and is a well-loved character among children across generations. This particular tale recounts Miffy?s day in school and the activities that take place there. Toddlers and preschoolers tend to be drawn in by the use of bold colours, so this book will help prepare them for entering school or childcare.
Fox in Socks by Dr. Seuss
This is one of my go-to books when it is reading time with my nephews. They are always tickled silly when we read this book together, as we try to follow the nonsensical, tongue-twisting conversation between Mr. Fox and Mr. Knox. Dr. Seuss? use of rhyming words builds vocabulary skills for preschoolers, while the imaginative situations he poses in his books provokes older kids to question or envision them. The best thing is, if the boys are already sleepy, the rhyming narrative lulls them to sleep ? score!
Possum Magic by Mem Fox
Hailed as an Australian classic, this is a heartwarming tale of a possum named Hush, her relationship with Grandma Poss and the adventures they have while searching for a cure for Hush. The two meet various animals and travel to different cities throughout Australia along the way. A lovely story that emphasises familial values and the importance of determination for kindergarteners.
The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me by Roald Dahl
While Roald Dahl?s books may border on the grisly at times, you can?t dismiss his knack for creating captivating stories that transport readers to a world beyond their own. This one is relatively tame, and it traces the adventures of four friends ? a boy, a monkey, a pelican and a giraffe ? establishing their window-cleaning business. The themes of friendship and being rewarded for doing good make this a warm story suitable for older school-going children.
So these are our April reads. If your child has other favourite stories featuring animals, share them with us!
